It's my birthday and...

I'll have cake if I want to!

Actually, I never liked birthday cake... but brownies...OMG.

Birthdays are such an odd human experience, right?

When you're a kid, you're excited to have all your friends come over to play and get presents...

OH THE PRESENTS!

And then you really put "party" into 'birthday party' by going out drinking (at least that was my experience in my 20s!) until your liver gives out and you drink less and dinner more...

Am I right?? ;)

But then somewhere along the way, birthdays become dreaded.

There are so many jokes on TV about this – turning 27 for the 7th time!!

Age is just a number... isn't it about how you FEEL???

One thing my parents often say to me, is that they don't feel their age. That at almost 70, they feel better than they did in their 40s... that going plant-based made them feel younger. More virile, more healthy.

I'm about a million times more active now in my 30s than I was in my 20s.

I got healthier as I got older, and I think that's true for a lot of us.

THE BEST HAS YET TO COME.

Maybe we finally realized we aren't invincible, or maybe poor choices in our youth start catching up... or maybe we see pictures of ourselves from the past and think "oh dear God I have to do something."

But whatever that is, your glory days are NOT behind you

IF you make the right choices now... fostering life inside you.

Older and wiser, and all that!

When people tell me I don't look my age, I know they mean that as a compliment...

but the reality is, I don't want to be 16 or 26 again. I was not healthy. I didn't feel well.

I had all kinds of stomach pains and migraines, acne and other bodily things that were so embarrassing I almost didn't want to leave home.

That was no way to live.

I was also around some of teenagers and college kids recently, and most of them were winded and out-of-breath on the hike.

A few were even complaining about how lousy they felt.

I'm glad I've stopped treating my body like a garbage disposal and graveyard.

Another year... another year to improve.

I want to live to be a 100... and LIVING when I reach it... not just existing.

Your future self depends on the choices you make today.

As I saw with my parents, it's NEVER too late...

Because if tomorrow really your last day...

Wouldn't you want to spend it feeling your BEST?

Really getting the most out of life?

FEELING awesome is my modus operandi.

You can't enjoy anything in life – not the joy of children or grandchildren, the new house or new car, the promotion at work, the dream vacation or Paris, or the rock concert or the whatever, if you're feeling like poop or not here.

A serious health scare made me rethink all my priorities – and my dreams.

I stopped "waiting until Monday" to start things. I stopped waiting until I had time or money, or whatever colorful reason or justification I came up with.

They were all repackaged excuses.

Feeling awesome – being healthy... THAT gave me wings.

And apparently, the fountain of youth ;)

Goodbye 33, hello 34.

My birthday wish is that you find your healthy happy.

Stop the blah blah blah and grab life by the kale.

Now excuse me while I go stuff my face with Meal Mentor Birthday Cake Oatmeal.

2. In a small bowl, combine oats, oat flour, baking powder and baking soda.

3. Add in the maple syrup, vanilla, applesauce, and 2 tbsp milk.

Feeling Overwhelmed? Alone on Healthy Island?

One of the biggest challenges for me wasn’t actually changing my diet, but doing it by myself.

I had the education.

I knew EXACTLY what I needed to do and WHY.

But it wasn’t happening. I was failing with my follow-through.

I WANTED to stay on track…

...but it’s hard to run laps around a track alone!

I was so mad at myself for constantly "slipping."

Often blaming peer pressure, or temptation...

even though 90% of the peer pressure was in my own head.

(And I usually put myself in temptation's way on purpose.)

Behind every successful person is a support team.

I knew this well from my career, both as a lawyer and author.

I couldn't argue and win my case in court without the support and help of my paralegals before the trial...

Likewise my manuscript could never be a book on the shelf without the support and help of my editor, publisher, etc.

Yet the person at B&N... or the juror in the courtroom...

They only see me and the finished product.

They don't see all those helping hands that GOT ME THERE.

I wondered, if I needed others to help get me where I need to go professionally...

did I also need them to bridge the gap personally?

ABSOLUTELY.

A "support team" for success is a universal necessity.

Whether it's a coach or cheerleader, or just connecting with others who share the same GOALS...

It really does take a village.

Having a COMMUNITY changed everything for me.

Yes, always having a plan in place: knowing what I was going to eat and when (and cooking my meals ahead) was KEY in avoiding temptation...

but a SUPPORT SYSTEM was my true saving grace.

I love our member community!!

But even if you can't join us, or even if you don't want to, promise me you'll find your own accountabilibuddy.

Find your peeps!!

SO YOU’RE NOT DOING IT ALONE.

Success is about creating a self-supporting environment and having a plan.

Get off the island of one, even if it's only through virtual friends.

Whatever your goal is, you'll get there faster with helping hands.

Transitioning to a Plant-Based Diet Later in Life Podcast + Newbie Tips!

A new Meal Mentor podcast is ready for you!

In this episode Ron (my co-pilot!) talks about transitioning later in life (he’s in his 70s!). Ron’s also lost nearly 70lbs and gives out some of the best tips I’ve ever heard for newbies transitioning.

https://dmi4pvc5gbhhd.cloudfront.net/2015/09/ron-podcast.jpg

His tip for how to measure hot sauce totally changed MY life, too! (It’ll blow your mind!) Ron is also the only veg head in his family (he still cooks non-veg food for the Mrs. and grandkids!) but has the most wonderful, optimistic outlook about it. “The upside is I don’t have to share my great food” he says, and “when you’re the only one you can invent your own way to say things. It doesn’t matter if you pronounce “quinoa” or “sriracha” incorrectly.” HAHA!!!!

This is by far the BEST episode to listen to if you’re feeling overwhelmed or all alone in your solitary vegginess. Lots of practical advice all in the spirit of not letting perfection get in the way of the good!

Have the Urge to Reward Weight-Loss with Food?

Can you relate to this?

“Last week i made a milestone and weighed under 140 for the first time in a few years. Now I am struggling with self sabotage. I am wanting to eat more and eat poorly. How can I fight this?”—Kimberly W.

I can identify SO MUCH with this.

Any time I could fit into my “skinny jeans” or when I would reach some goal weight on the scale, I would IMMEDIATELY want to go out and get an ice cream or something junky to celebrate…

OR I would think I could now start eating more food and slip on my nutritional excellence…

This is completely nonsensical.

WHY WOULD I WANT TO STOP DOING WHAT’S WORKING FOR ME?

But yet EVERY TIME with EVERY goal, this is how my brain worked…

Food rewarding has been deeply ingrained into our culture and psyche.

We were given candy as prizes for getting the right answers…

Cookies and chocolate for cleaning our rooms…

Ice cream and cakes were always part of birthdays, victories, and happy times…

Society created an association of success and achievement with dessert.

I like to remind myself: Is feeding myself things that aren’t good for me, or is maintaining bad habits or food addictions really how I can treat myself well?

REDEFINE “Treating yourself.”

Take the money you would have spent—literally remove it from your wallet and put it into a jar —and save up for a massage, a concert, a mani-pedi, etc.

OR save up for a big-ticket item like designer jeans or a painting for your home—something that’ll be a constant reminder of your success!

A healthy lifestyle doesn’t have a “finish line” (and neither does weight loss).

There’s no, “Yay! Crossed the finish! That’s over now. I don’t have to do that anymore.

THIS is why “Diets” never work except when you’re on them…

…Because if you stop doing it and if you go back to your old ways, you’ll go back to your old self.

You don’t go on a diet. You have to CHANGE your diet.

But being committed to nutritional excellence doesn’t mean you can’t ever splurge!

Admittedly, I splurge a handful of times during the year, but it is so in incredibly infrequent in my life that when I do, it’s all the more special—the way it should be.

Plan for it and balance it with good, CONSISTENT choices day-to-day.

Set yourself up for success using a meal plan and support-system community.

P.S. If the scale is a trigger for this self-sabotage thinking, perhaps consider using another way to measure your loss, such as using a pair of pants or taking tape measurements.
